NO Vacuum Bag? Experiment: Using Memory Foam for Carbon Fiber Layups
Description
Vacuum bagging is the professional standard for carbon fiber—it provides unmatched compression and resin control. But if you’re a hobbyist or just starting your DIY hydrofoil journey, the cost of a vacuum setup can be a huge barrier. In this video, I’m experimenting with a low-cost alternative that delivers surprisingly high-quality results: The Memory Foam Press.
We’re laminating a custom stabilizer with a Yellow Cedar core and 3 layers of 6oz carbon fiber. I wanted to see if the uniform, "wraparound" pressure of memory foam could handle the complex curves and tips of a foil wing without the need for a pump, bagging film, or sealant tape.
This isn't a replacement for a professional vacuum setup, but for the garage builder on a budget, it is a massive step up from a simple hand-burnished layup.
What we cover in this experiment:
Why Memory Foam? uniform clamping pressure.
The "Fold" Technique: How to get carbon fiber to wrap around leading and trailing edges.
Resin Management: Tips for preventing "dry spots" when you can't rely on vacuum suction.
Step-by-Step Build: From a raw Yellow Cedar block to a glassed, high-modulus wing.
The Comparison: Looking at surface finish and bond strength vs. traditional methods.
Riding Test: Does the foam-pressed wing handle the torque of real-world foiling?
Materials Used:
Yellow Cedar (Solid Core)
6oz 3K Carbon Fiber
Slow-Cure Marine Epoxy
4-inch Memory Foam (low Density)
